I Need a Drink 8-1-20

I opened the paper today
And the front page, to my dismay
Reported much grief
With little relief
And it’s been this way day after day

Can he delay an election? asked Kaine
Of Pompeo, the answer is plain
But he did just shrug
The definition of smug
Enough to give me a migraine

$600 checks stop today
Yet Republicans don’t want to pay
To keep people housed
My anger aroused
Perhaps it would help if I pray

DHS investigates press
Covering protests, no less
Is amendment one
Completely undone?
Now I need a cold compress

Economy by far the worst
But this too could have been reversed
If Trump had led
And stopped COVID’s spread
I fear an impending outburst

His secret Police do attack
No housing for you if you’re Black
Dog whistle he blows
Polling places will close
I think I now need some Prozac

End the census ahead of time
So the numbers in blue states won’t climb
Republicans stay mum
Do they think we are dumb?
I need a gin/tonic with lime

Passed 150K deaths yesterday
Still no plan to keep COVID at bay
Still in denial,
He should be on trial
My hair just got a bit more gray

Boycotts the John Lewis Service
Doing his office disservice
A civil rights hero
To Trump he’s a zero
I’m growing more and more nervous

Yes, the news might be quite hard to take
But the Times and the Post are NOT FAKE
So, I’ll grab my café
And start every day
With them, ‘cause so much is at stake

Journalists tell truth in its starkness
Though they might highlight what is heartless
I will set my sights
Where they shine the light
Democracy does die in darkness
